I picked up this little gem on my Nintendo Switch and I’ve been playing it like crazy. I have to admit I am sucker for tower defense games. I can’t even begin to count the hours I have put into games like Field Runners, The Creeps, and the Kingdom Rush series. (these were all played on mobile platforms but I am sure they are on PC and other platforms).
OTTTD offers up exactly what I look for in a tower defense game, solid controls, interesting and up-gradable towers, and adjustable difficulty. When I first fired this game up, the first level destroyed me, and I had a moment of “what have I got myself into”, then I dropped it to easy and moved on. This game also uses heroes, which in my opinion can go either way, and I find this game uses them to enhance instead of making them the be all end all of completing the level. Other tower defense games slog you down with managing your towers and having to really micro manage the heroes, these guys I find a strategic spot and park them for the match and i basically end up using them for their special abilities more than their individual fire power. To start with you just get one hero and as you work through the levels you unlock more heroes, and can use up to three heroes in a level later on. I’ve unlocked seven so far as you can see, looks like maybe there are nine in total?
When you start a match your hero(es) drops in and you can check out the play field. In standard tower defense fashion there are a limited number of spots and you must chose the best tower for the area.
Which brings us to the towers, the game slowly introduces you to the towers and their upgrades through the early tutorial levels.
First up, the almost standard for every tower defense, the Gatling tower. It has two different upgrade, the Blamwitzer and Velocadrone.
Next up we have the Pulse Cannon, which can be upgraded to either the Omnicannon or the Deathbeamer.
Also there is the Rocket tower, with its upgrades, The Needler or the Anti Air Battery.
Finally we have the Shock (slowing) Tower, which can be upgraded to the Healthenator or the Shield Emitter.
So place the towers in different locations, letting the Shock tower slow enemies while being attacked by any of the offensive towers and hope you are able to destroy everything before it reaches your base.
and sometimes it doesn’t work out lol
Overall I am really enjoying this game and can recommend it to anyone who enjoys tower defense type games. If there is one thing that is kind of a negative is that playing this on the Switch in portable mode, it is a hog on the battery. With 100% charge I played for 10 mins and was down to 85% battery, at that rate you will get just over an hour of play.
If you have a Switch watch for this one, a blind buy that didn’t make me Grumpy at all.
P.S. sometimes you redeem yourself too 😉
