15 minutes with Revenge of the Bird King

October 19, 2019|All Reviews, Fifteen Minutes With Review

Ok so this is the inaugural review for a new section we are trying out, where we spend 15 minutes with a game and decide whether it was worth that time and if we plan to spend more time with it or not.

Now whats driving this new type of review?  Well in the Nintendo Switch online store they have some crazy sales on games, like 90% off or more.  So when I see a sale like this I am extremely interested in picking up the game at such a reduced price, I mean this first title I am doing was on sale for $0.12!!!!!  No that is not a typo, this is the price it is going for.

I will check out the trailer and the screen shots and if the game looks even remotely interesting I will just blind purchase it. Because when a game is around a $1.00, how can you lose?  Seriously?  You can’t even get a coffee for that much these days and the chance that maybe the game is actually a gem is the best part of this safe little gamble. I have picked up a bunch of games like this, and I figured this gives me an excuse to try them out and share the experience with the people instead of just skipping them over to play something I know.

So lets get on with the 15 minutes with review of Revenge of the Bird King.

Gameplay

Revenge of the Bird King is a side scrolling platformer done in retro style 8/16 bit graphics.  The music is well done and keeps to this same retro style genre as well.  The controls are tight and responsive.  The one thing that makes the game stand out so far is the seed planting system, to get a gun and bullets for your gun you just plant a seed and a gun sprouts out.  Through the tutorial I unlocked another feature with this system where you throw a seed down and it sprouts a turret that fires off a bunch of shots in both directions to help you clear enemies in areas where they may be too many enemies or in a hard to shot spot.  There doesn’t seem to be any limit to the seeds you throw. You also always have your blade as a melee weapon which can be used to take the armor off enemies, knock them back and also break through some walls.  Here is the seed system in action:

This system seems like it may be upgraded further on in the game, but like the review says I only spent 15 minutes with it 🙂

It also seems that after the tutorial level you roam a top down menu encountering enemies and finding places to explore, check it here:

Final Verdict

At $0.12 I have already gotten more then enough enjoyment out of this game to make the cost worth it.  Will I go back and play some more of it? Heck ya I will, it seems like a very well put together game and I am sure there is lots more to get out of it.  So if you can pick it up at this rate do it, you won’t be disappointed.
